Brockton experienced an economic boom through shoe manufacturing until the industry moved to locations with cheaper labor and better access to resources. The manufacturing mill buildings, built between 1890 and 1930, remain throughout the city as a legacy of the industrial era. Many of these buildings are abandoned and left empty, yet their interior structures are still intact, offering a vivid narrative of the building techniques and the stories they hold. In fact, we are still learning from their construction details, especially as recent advancements in timber structural materials bring new light to heavy timber construction.

Fish Design was engaged to repurpose the mill building into 24 dwelling units. This project makes sense due to the building’s easy access to the commuter rail station, offering a direct connection to downtown Boston. It also aims to attract families seeking affordable housing in Brockton’s downtown, helping to restore the area’s vibrancy.
