The fourth location of brick-and-mortar retail was proposed within the Women and Infant lobby in Providence. Like the third location in Cambridge, creating the domestic kitchen environment was pursued. The equipment, refrigerators, point of sales, and greeting tables were lined up and folded into the space.
The material palette is composed of elements commonly found in domestic kitchens—painted and clear finish wood, ceramic tiles, and marble countertops. Mirror-finish stainless steel laminate covers the existing walls, visually expanding the space and reflecting exterior views.
The lobby sits between two buildings constructed at different times and positioned at different angles. Rather than aligning with either building, it follows a third orientation. A folded service strip defines a distinctive, home kitchen-like space while simultaneously reinforcing the lobby’s orientation, allowing for a seamless spatial experience.
The new counter bends to align with lobby subtly guiding customers through the transition between the 1986 structure and the new lobby.
