Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) trim is commonly used as a finish material, typically attached to substrate surfaces. Known for its dimensional stability, PVC trim requires less maintenance compared to wood. This project explores the structural potential of PVC trim materials by using them to create a screen system that frames views, capturing more of the surrounding landscape and less of the street.
Despite its advantages, PVC is on the Living Building Challenge’s Red List due to the inclusion of phthalates and its non-biodegradable nature. However, given its durability and ease of fabrication, it presents an opportunity to investigate alternatives, including biodegradable options and formulations that exclude harmful chemicals.
